EMI Bites: Two Simple Fixes to Slash Crosstalk in PCBs

Crosstalk can sabotage PCB performance, but two straightforward techniques make a big difference.

First, increase the distance between traces.

Widening the gap to three trace widths dramatically reduces crosstalk, minimizing interference and improving layout reliability.

If the layout is too crowded, position the Return Reference Plane (RRP) as close as possible to the signal layers.

This minimizes the spread of signal fringe fields.

Second, manage layer transitions.

When signals move from top to bottom layers, uncontained fields can spread without a reference plane. Adding at least one return via next to the signal via keeps fields contained, ensuring signal integrity.

Apply these strategies to boost EMC performance.
