EMI Bites: Dealing with EMI does not have to be complex if you start with the right fundamentals.

The issue is that we have not been taught right from the beginning.
We learned that electrons are the protagonists of the electromagnetic fields story of propagation.
This leads us to learn to build circuits with electrons flowing through the copper in mind, instead of electromagnetic field channels.
Once I learned these simple fundamentals—that is, fields that carry the energy of the signal, not the electrons—it all changed.
You can then picture how you need to build channels to contain the fields, instead of single strings of conductors to carry the electrons inside.
This is one of the major shifts that leads to building fast-track EMC compliance circuits.
If you think about it, when you do the EMC tests, you are simply measuring how the energy of the fields is emanated into the outside world, or how the energy coming from the outside world acts on your circuit.
If you design with that in mind, EMI is no longer a problem, because you can then understand how to mitigate and also fix issues if they appear.
Give this a try.
