If you’re trying to understand EMI, nothing will make sense until you grasp this one thing.
EMI can be a total mystery.
And don’t worry about the equations and symbols—they’re not the real challenge here.
The real challenge is understanding the concept behind them.
To me, this is where Maxwell’s biggest contribution to Ampère’s Law comes in.
It’s the idea that a changing electric field over time causes this effect — displacement of charges.
Maxwell called it the displacement current.
If you get this concept, you’ll be able to unlock the so-called "Black Magic" of EMI.
Without it, PCBs will just look like a direct translation of electrical schematics.
And yes, things can work.
Until they don’t.
And that’s when you’ll find yourself stuck, trying to figure out why your PCB isn’t passing EMC tests.
